Parchment is a term widely used in the coffee industry to describe a specific stage in the lifecycle of coffee beans. It refers to the thin, protective layer that covers the bean after it is harvested and processed. During the coffee production process, after the cherries are picked, they undergo a series of steps that include washing, fermenting, and drying. As part of the drying stage, the outer skin, pulp, and mucilage are removed, leaving behind the parchment layer.

The parchment layer plays a crucial role in preserving the coffee beans' quality and flavor. It acts as a natural barrier, protecting the beans from moisture, insects, and other external elements. Additionally, the parchment layer helps in maintaining the beans' internal moisture content, which is essential for proper storage and transport.

Once the coffee beans reach their destination, the parchment layer is usually removed through a process called hulling. The beans are then ready for roasting, grinding, and brewing, transforming into the aromatic and flavorful beverage we all love - coffee.
